Republican Wave Stops Short in Obama's Home State

Wednesday, 03 November 2010 06:56 AM EDT

HONOLULU (AP) — The national Republican wave in the midterm elections didn't spread to President Barack Obama's former state.

Hawaii voters put Democrat Neil Abercrombie in the governor's office and ousted a GOP member of Congress. And Democratic Sen. Daniel Inouye cruised to a ninth term.

Democrat Colleen Hanabusa defeated GOP Rep. Charles Djou (duh-JOO') to win a House seat representing urban Honolulu and help complete the sweep. It was one of only a few Democrat gains in the House.

It will be a short tenure for Djou. He won the seat against Hanabusa in May in a winner-take-all election after Abercrombie stepped down form Congress to run for governor. The election split Democratic support between Hanabusa and several other candidates.
