WASHINGTON (AP) — Michigan's new governor is a Republican who has said he can ease the state's economic troubles.
Businessman Rick Snyder will take office in a state that is mired in a 13.1 percent unemployment. He easily defeated his Democratic opponent, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero. Democrat Jennifer Granholm couldn't run again because of term limits.
Oklahoma has its first female governor — Republican Rep. Mary Fallin. And Maryland Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley has been re-elected after a nasty rematch of his 2006 race against Republican former Gov. Robert Ehrlich.
In House and Senate races, Democratic incumbents have been falling. But while Republicans are closing in on control of the House, the Senate still appears out of reach.
And one Senate race in which Republicans tried to take advantage of voter disappointment with President Barack Obama went to Democrat Joe Manchin in West Virginia.
