Actress Cynthia Nixon announced in a tweet on Monday that she will be running to become New York governor.
Nixon, who is best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the "Sex and the City" television series and movies, will have to compete against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is seeking a third term, in the Democratic primary.
In a Siena College poll released on Monday before her announcement, Cuomo was favored 66 percent to 19 percent over Nixon among registered Democrats, according to the Democrat & Chronicle.
Even among self-identified liberals, who Nixon seeks to attract specifically, Cuomo held a similar lead.
"While Nixon does a little better among younger and upstate Democrats, she doesn't have the support of more than one-quarter of either group," said Steven Greenberg, a spokesman for the Siena poll.
