Rep. Markey of Colo. Swings at Challenger in Debate

Tuesday, 19 October 2010 10:24 PM EDT

LOVELAND, Colo. — Embattled Democratic U.S. Rep. Betsy Markey came out swinging against her Republican challenger in their first debate in Loveland, Colo.

Markey questioned Republican Cory Gardner's honesty and defended her support of the stimulus package and the health care overhaul.

The Democrat was booed at times during the debate Tuesday as she challenged Gardner, a state lawmaker. Markey pointed out a Gardner ad in which she claims her voting record was misrepresented and asked whether Gardner could be trusted.

Gardner criticized Markey's support of the stimulus and the health care overhaul, saying government spending must be slowed.

Markey is considered among the most vulnerable House Democrats because Republicans hold a registration advantage in her district.
