The United States should "find a way out" of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran unless France and other allies in Europe increase their sanctions on the country, two Republican senators said Tuesday.
"I think the Iran deal is a bad deal," Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida said on Fox News’ "America's Newsroom," alongside Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina.
"I hope our European allies will step forward. Those are the ones that like the deal. We hope they'll step forward and really sanction all of the companies that help them build these missiles. Otherwise, I think the president should get out of the deal," he added.
"It would be important for us to find a way out if we could," Scott said. "But the question is will our European partners allow that to happen."
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a speech Tuesday that any nation that leaves the agreement "would face serious consequences," according to Reuters.
"I am telling those in the White House that if they do not live up to their commitments...the Iranian government will firmly react," he added.
"We want to have these strong alliances," Rubio said, specifying France as an "important ally," but said that the deal wasn’t intended to grant Iran "immunity."
"Iran cannot build missiles that can reach us," he said.
