Twitter clarified its policy on allowing world leaders such as President Donald Trump to use its social media network Friday, saying blocking their accounts would carry a negative consequence.
Trump tweets his thoughts on a daily basis, and some of the tweets have been construed as unpresidential and inappropriate. Some critics have called on Twitter to suspend his account — which actually happened briefly in November, although that was said to be an unintentional mistake.
"Twitter is here to serve and help advance the global, public conversation. Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation because of their outsized impact on our society," Twitter wrote.
"Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial tweets would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions."
The announcement added, "We review tweets by leaders within the political context that defines them, and enforce our rules accordingly."
Recent Trump tweets that caused outrage include one in which he said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., "would do anything" for campaign contributions from Trump before he ran for president and his spat with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over their respective "nuclear buttons."
