President Donald Trump once again hit out at Georgia's Brian Kemp, calling the Republican governor a "fool" and a "clown" for not calling a special session of the legislature to enforce signature verification on election ballots.
"What a fool Governor @BrianKempGA of Georgia is. Could have been so easy, but now we have to do it the hard way," Trump tweeted at 12:03 a.m. on Monday. "Demand this clown call a Special Session and open up signature verification, NOW. Otherwise, could be a bad day for two GREAT Senators on January 5th."
Minutes earlier, the president wrote on Twitter, "Democrats weakened the Signature Verification (and other) safeguards in Georgia. @staceyabrams played @BrianKempGA & Secretary of State, for fools. Consent Decree, which is terrible for Republicans (and honest people!), must be opened up NOW - David, Kelly, and I will then win!"
The tweet concerning former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and the consent decree was tagged by Twitter. A warning label on the post reads: "This claim about election fraud is disputed."
Trump and other Republicans, including Georgia Rep. Doug Collins, have claimed a consent decree signed earlier this year "gutted our verification process," getting rid of a rule in the state that signatures on voter registration cards must be matched with those on other records.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has countered this, saying that Georgia actually requires signature matching for absentee ballots, according to The Associated Press.
The president's tweets indicate he believes a stronger signature verification process would help not only himself, but Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, the two Georgia Republicans running in the Jan. 5 runoff election. The results of those races will determine which party controls the Senate.
The Electoral College is set to vote Monday to make Democrat Joe Biden the president-elect, though Trump has said he is not planning to accept that result.
