Dem. Law Professor Turley: Testifying for Republicans Called 'Sin' Against Legal Academy

By    |   Saturday, 28 December 2019 12:49 PM EST

George Washington law professor Jonathan Turley, the legal expert who appeared before the House Judiciary Committee as a GOP witness during the impeachment proceedings, on Saturday quipped about being branded a sinner for testifying for Republicans in an opinion piece for The Hill.

Turley, who has been highly critical of the impeachment process, has called the evidence against Trump incomplete and conflicted.

But testifying for Republicans, he said Saturday, “is a sin against the legal academy” and could be considered a violation of the “Eleventh Commandment.”

“Like all mortal sins, the violation of the Eleventh Commandment comes with not just eternal but immediate damnation,” Turley writes.

“What is most striking about this commandment is that it does not matter if your testimony is made in good faith. For example, under the Ninth Commandment, you are only guilty if you give false evidence against your neighbor. Under the Eleventh Commandment, it does not matter if your testimony is true or false. A law-fearing academic must not give any testimony for Republicans.”

Turley in his piece for the Hill also defended himself from the publication of “false stories” following his testimony, including claims he flipped his testimony from the Clinton impeachment.
