House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., blasted President Donald Trump for his Syria truce agreement, calling the deal with Turkey a "sham ceasefire" that shows the president is "flailing."
"The president's decision to reverse sanctions against Turkey for brutally attacking our Kurdish partners in exchange for a sham ceasefire seriously undermines the credibility of America’s foreign policy and sends a dangerous message to our allies and adversaries alike that our word cannot be trusted," the two said in a joint statement.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday agreed to "pause" his offensive against the Kurdish YPG fighters in northern Syria as the United States "facilitates" its withdrawal from the border zone for 120 hours in order to allow the fighters to evacuate.
The agreement will maintain a "permanent cease-fire" once the evacuation is complete. Trump in exchange will lift sanctions on Turkey he imposed this week.
"President Erdogan has given up nothing, and President Trump has given him everything," Pelosi and Schumer wrote. "The Turks have stated that 'this is not a cease-fire,' and made clear that they 'will pause the operation for 120 hours in order for the terrorists to leave' – referring to the courageous Kurdish fighters who have suffered nearly 11,000 casualties in our fight to defeat ISIS."
