President Donald Trump lit into the "failing" The New York Times in a Twitter post Monday, accusing the newspaper of "making up stories" about him.

The tweet appears to be written in the spirit of other posts he issued earlier Monday, blasting "fake news" polls by the mainstream media and insisting he calls his own shots in the White House.

Although Trump does not specify the story that sparked his tweet, the Times concluded it likely was sparked by its report on his "his early stumbles" published online Sunday night. The article suggested Trump was not fully briefed on the details of an executive action he signed, giving chief strategist Steve Bannon more power.

"Trump has long delighted in denigrating the Times and claiming, falsely, that its coverage of him has led to declining readership," the Times said in its response. "But in a meeting at the Times in November, he called the paper, which is among his first reads each morning, 'a great, great American jewel.'

"Last week, the Times surpassed 3 million print and digital subscriptions, adding 276,000 net digital-only subscriptions to its news products in the last three months of the year, more additions than in 2013 and 2014 combined." the Times continued.
