President Donald Trump pointed to the famous movie “Mutiny on the Bounty,” in addressing concerns by some governors over whether he has the authority to decide when states will be able to reopen after the coronavirus crisis eases.
Trump’s comments came in a Tuesday tweet.
He wrote: “Tell the Democrat Governors that ‘Mutiny On The Bounty’ was one of my all time favorite movies. A good old fashioned mutiny every now and then is an exciting and invigorating thing to watch, especially when the mutineers need so much from the Captain. Too easy!”
The New York Daily News noted that in the 1962 film “Mutiny on the Bounty” the “tyrannical” Capt. Bligh loses his fight to keep control of his crew.
Trump had tweeted on Monday that “it is the decision of the President” to lift state-ordered mandates concerning public gathers and business closures.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had warned Trump on Tuesday not to push reopening his state too early and said there would be a "constitutional crisis" if that happens.
"If he thinks he's going to force this state, or any state for that matter, to do something that is reckless or irresponsible, that could endanger human life, literally, because we don't reopen correctly, you will see those virus numbers go up again, and more people will die,” Cuomo told NBC’s “Today” show.
“We don't have a king — we have a president, and that was a big decision. We ran away from having a king, and George Washington was president, not King Washington so the president doesn't have total authority.”
