President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday "wow, but is anybody really surprised" former FBI lawyer Lisa Page defied a subpoena to interview privately before two House committees investigating alleged bias in the Justice Department.

"Together with her lover, FBI agent Peter Strzok, she worked on the rigged witch hunt, perhaps the most tainted and corrupt case ever," Trump said in his post:

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday warned Page she must appear for the private session before the Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees or the House could take action against her.

Page's attorney, Amy Jeffress, said late Tuesday she would not appear for the interview, scheduled for Wednesday, despite the subpoena.

But Jeffress said in a new statement Wednesday that her client had offered to voluntarily appear before the committees later this month, but needed more clarification on what she would be asked.

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, the Virginia Republican, said Page had known for months about an interview, and the committee would use "all tools at our disposal" to obtain it.

Ryan said the House would "do what we need to do to protect this branch of government" and that he backed Goodlatte.

"A subpoena to testify before Congress is not optional, it's mandatory," the speaker said.

If a witness does not respond to a subpoena, the full House can vote to hold that person in contempt of Congress.

The chamber did that in 2012 to Attorney General Eric Holder for refusing to turn over documents to the Oversight Committee on the botched "Fast and Furious" gun-running operation.
