Incoming President Donald Trump's transition team is beginning to look for a chairman for the Office of Management and Budget. The team is considering South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney for the job, according to a New York Times report.
The Times said that Mulvaney is a hard-liner on government spending, and has met with Trump and expressed interest in taking on the role.
He was an early part of the Freedom Caucus, and was voted in to the House of Representatives in the Tea Party wave of 2010, the Times reported.
However, Mulvaney has been a supporter of House Speaker Paul Ryan, who was not a firm backer of Trump's during the campaign.
The Times said that some Trump associates are telling him to give the job to someone who has been steady in their Trump support, such as David Malpass, one of Trump's senior economic advisers.
Peter Ferrara, who served under President Ronald Reagan in policy development, praised Mulvaney as an "ideal" candidate in a Townhall opinion piece.
"Mulvaney is perfectly suited in that office to shepherd through all the components of Reagan's economic recovery program to restore booming economic growth, already supported by President-elect Trump. That includes Trump's tax reform plan to sharply reduce tax rates, especially the critical corporate tax rate," Ferrara wrote.
