The New York Times responded to President Donald Trump's claim that he has "prepaid millions of dollars" in taxes by saying the statement was "misleading at best."
The Times has published in recent weeks what it claims to be some of Trump's tax returns. Reporters Susanne Craig and Mike McIntire wrote in a piece published late Monday that Trump's tweet about prepaying his federal income taxes was designed to distract from what they said was him paying very little taxes over the years.
"As with much of what Mr. Trump has said about his taxes, however, his assertion about prepayments is misleading at best, and serves to distract from the reality — unaddressed in any of his public statements — that he has paid little or no federal income taxes most years, largely because his business losses far outweighed his profits," they wrote.
Going deeper, Craig and McIntire said Trump made estimated tax payments during the year but then got refunds, which reduced the total income tax he paid to as low as $750 in some years.
Trump has refused to release his tax returns, saying they are under audit and that his legal team recommends keeping them private.
