Reports: Trump Plans to Go Ahead With State of the Union Speech

Tuesday, 22 January 2019 01:47 PM EST

President Donald Trump is planning to go ahead with his State of the Union address next week, despite the government shutdown and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's insistence that it be delayed.

Fox News Channel, citing multiple unnamed sources, reported Tuesday that it is unclear whether Jan. 29 will go forward on that date or where Trump would deliver it.

The White House is even planning for the possibility of a speech outside of Washington, reports Fox. "We are still in a holding pattern," the network quoted a senior source as saying.

"We have no announcement at this time but Nancy Pelosi does not dictate when he will or will not have a conversation with the American people," White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said on Fox News Channel's "America's Newsroom."

"There are many ways to deliver the State of the Union. I will not get ahead of what he [Trump] will announce, but the fact is, she [Pelosi] has not canceled it but asked us to postpone it," Gidley added.

The White House sent an email to the House Sergeant-at-Arms on Tuesday asking to schedule a walk-through for the speech in anticipation of a Jan. 29 delivery, The Associated Press report, citing a White House officia.

Pelosi had sent a letter to Trump last week suggesting he either deliver it in writing or delay it until after the partial government shutdown is resolved, citing security concerns.

Pelosi's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
