According to a new book, President Donald Trump repeatedly told White House counsel Don McGahn that he wasn’t worried about special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation because he could “settle” with Mueller.
New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt makes that claim and several others involving Trump’s time in office in a new book released Tuesday titled “Donald Trump v. The United States.”
“At one point, as the investigation seemed to be intensifying,” Schmidt writes, according to an excerpt obtained by Axios. Trump told McGahn there was “nothing to worry about because if it was zeroing in on him, he would simply settle with Mueller. He would settle the case, as if he were negotiating terms in a lawsuit.”
According to Axios, Schmidt’s book is based on documents obtained from Mueller’s office, the FBI, the White House and Trump’s personal legal team. He also conducted hundreds of hours of conversations with current and former officials and people involved in the investigation.
Schmidt’s book goes into way more detail than reports published by The New York Times did, Raw Story reports. Schmidt covered the Russia probe for the newspaper and earned a Pulitzer Price for his early reporting on the investigation.
The Times did publish an article on Sunday that was adapted from his book.
