A lawyer for President Donald Trump sent a cease and desist letter to the author and publisher of a new book that contains explosive claims about the administration.

ABC News reported that Charles Harder sent a letter to author Michael Wolff and his publisher Henry Holt and Co. Inc. that demanded they "cease and desist from any further publication, release or dissemination" of the book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House."

New York Magazine published a lengthy excerpt of the book Wednesday. It is slated for a full release next Tuesday.

Harder also sent a cease and desist letter to former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon Wednesday night regarding the book.

The published excerpt contains several quotes from Bannon and others within Trump's inner circle bashing the president and members of his family. The White House called the book "trashy tabloid fiction."

Trump even released a statement that tried to create distance between himself and Bannon, saying Bannon's White House role — from which he was fired last August — was limited in scope.

Wolff conducted more than 200 interviews during the research process for the book. He had a "blue badge" at the White House instead of the traditional press badge, giving him wide access to the West Wing, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal protocol.

One former White House official said Wolff was known to camp out for hours in the West Wing lobby after meetings, sitting on a sofa as he waited to talk to staffers passing by.

According to Axios, Wolff also would meet with White House officials at the Hay Adams Hotel, which is across the street from the White House. The website also reported that at least some of the people interviewed for the book thought their conversations were off the record.

Material from The Associated Press was used in this report.
