Donald Trump Jr. downplayed the surge in new coronavirus cases, saying the number is "almost nothing."

His comments came Thursday during an interview on the Fox News show "The Ingraham Angle."

He called those who are warning others to stay away from crowded rallies for President Donald Trump "truly morons."

"I went through the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] data, because I kept hearing about new infections, but I was like, 'Well why aren't they talking about this?'" Trump Jr. said. "Oh, oh, because the number is almost nothing. Because we've gotten control of this thing, we understand how it works. They have the therapeutics to be able to deal with this."

And he added: "It's gone to almost nothing. We're outperforming Europe in a positive way."

And he criticized Democrats who have pushed for more restrictions.

"Why don't we shut down for 10 or 15 years?" the president's son asked. "Why don't we do that?"

The Washington Post noted at least 1,063 people in the U.S. died from COVID-19 on Thursday. It marked the second-highest daily figure for October. The newspaper reported at least 228,000 people in the U.S. have died from the virus.
