A statement from the Trump Foundation that pushed back against a lawsuit from the New York state attorney general came from a Trump Org email address, The New York Times’ Kenneth Vogel reported in a tweet.
"This is politics at its very worst… The Foundation currently has $1.7 million remaining, which the NYAG has been holding hostage for political gain. This is unconscionable," the Trump Foundation statement said.
New York's attorney general on Thursday filed a lawsuit that said President Donald Trump used the foundation to settle personal business disputes and ramp up his political image with donations that his staff directed.
The Trump Foundation statement also said that previous attorney general Eric Schneiderman had used attacks on the Foundation for political fundraising and that acting AG Barbara Underwood was continuing the political attacks against the Foundation.
In a tax filing in Nov. 2017, the foundation announced its intention to close down, NBC reported at the time.
