Donald Trump responded to criticisms of his foundation Wednesday by saying it donates money to veterans.
During a brief interview in Toledo, Ohio, Trump addressed the controversy in the wake of a Washington Post report that claimed he has used money from his foundation to settle legal bills.
"The foundation is really there," Trump said. "It gives money to vets. It's really been doing a good job. I think we put that to sleep just by putting out the last report."
The Post report slammed Trump and said his foundation spent more than $250,000 of its money — which it received from donors — for settlements in legal cases, for purchases of paintings, and more.
The Trump campaign said the report was false and inaccurate.
"In typical Washington Post fashion, they've gotten their facts wrong," Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller said. "It is the Clinton Foundation that is set up to make sure the Clintons personally enrich themselves by selling access and trading political favors.
"The Trump Foundation has no paid board, no management fees, no rent or overhead, and no family members on its payroll."
