President Donald Trump said Thursday that many Republican senators are urging him to veto the bill that reauthorizes the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Trump made his comments in a tweet. He wrote: “Many Republican Senators want me to Veto the FISA Bill until we find out what led to, and happened with, the illegal attempted ‘coup’ of the duly elected President of the United States, and others!”

Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department’s internal watchdog, had told Congress in December that he was concerned that “so many basic and fundamental errors” were made by the FBI as it investigated ties between the Trump campaign and Russia in 2016.

Trump, along with many Republicans, have argued that Horowitz identified FISA problems that must be remedied before reauthorizing the surveillance law.

And Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, in a recent column for Fox News said: "The FBI improperly spied on the Trump campaign in 2016. We must ensure the bureau can't do it in 2020 or ever again. Because if the FBI can unfairly target a presidential campaign, imagine what it can do to regular Americans.”

The Hill noted that Lee and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., have been pressing Trump to veto the bill.

The measure was passed by the House on Wednesday. A Senate vote could come as early as Thursday.
