Donald Trump said Wednesday that it was "very important that we elevate the conversation" to relevant issues during the rest of the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

"I would much rather talk about the issues than the kind of things that are brought up," the front-runner told Chris Matthews during an MSNBC town hall at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

In response to a question from Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt on improving the decorum of the campaign, Trump said that the media has focused on many extraneous issues "sometimes … because it's me — and sometimes, they get brought up for a lot of other reasons.

"Generally speaking, I agree. We have some very hard issues. We should talk about them.

"But I think it's very important that we elevate the conversation — and I agree with you 100 percent," Trump told Schmitt. "I would much rather be discussing nuclear weapons and all of the other issues that we're discussing than the kind of things that you're referring to."
