President Donald Trump says he thinks his political opponents are pushing to keep the economy closed going into the fall presidential election for political reasons, not because of the threat of the coronavirus pandemic.

"I think it's a political thing," Trump told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo Wednesday for an interview airing Thursday morning on "Mornings With Maria." "I think the people that want to see the right thing happen, they agree with me. We have to get our country open. If it was up to some people, let's keep it closed for a long time and watch the United States go down. It's never going to happen on my watch."

Trump called COVID-19 a "horrible plague" but at the same time, "we have to open our country."

"We have no choice," he said. "People are dying this way too ... they are dying with this closure, with the shutdown of a country where they're in the house, apartment, some people are too tough on it. They are not allowed to go out. They are losing their jobs. We will not let it happen."

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pushing her $3 trillion "HEROES Act" because she wants to change the way Americans vote, Trump claimed.

"The level of dishonesty with Democrat voting is unbelievable," said Trump. "If you told a Republican to vote twice, they'd get sick at even the thought of it. And you have people that vote numerous times. What's happening is crazy. So now they want to send out vote-by-mail. Who knows who is signing this stuff?"

Bartiromo pointed out that Pelosi is third in line for the presidency, but Trump insisted that "it's never going to happen."

"We'll keep our vice president very healthy and I'll stay healthy," said Trump. "It's never going to happen. She would be a disaster. Nancy Pelosi is a disaster. What she wants to do is get involved with the voting. She just got back to Washington. Everyone's saying what was so long. She just got back here. So let's just see how it all works out."
