President Donald Trump early Monday railed against the "stupid trade" issues between the United States and China that have resulted in a wide difference in the amount of tariffs levied on cars entering the two countries.
"When a car is sent to the United States from China, there is a Tariff to be paid of 2 1/2%," Trump tweeted. "When a car is sent to China from the United States, there is a Tariff to be paid of 25%. Does that sound like free or fair trade. No, it sounds like STUPID TRADE - going on for years!"
The latest tweet follows a Sunday morning message, in which he said he can see an end to the growing trade disputes with China, predicting the rival nation will "take down its trade barriers because it is the right thing to do."
He added on Sunday that trades will become "reciprocal" and that he and China's President Xi Jinping "will always be friends, no matter what happens with our dispute on trade."
Despite Trump's strong words and fears in the stock market that a trade war is looming between the United States and China, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Sunday he doesn't expect a trade war, even though he acknowledged there is a risk of one.
"Our expectation is that we don't think there will be a trade war; our objective is to continue to have discussions with China ... I don't expect there will be a trade war - it could be, but I don't expect it at all," he told CBS' Face The Nation.
