Trump: Political Violence Must Never 'Take Root'

By    |   Friday, 26 October 2018 01:05 PM

President Donald Trump Friday, while commenting on the arrest of a suspect in connection with the pipe bombs that were sent to several Democratic leaders over the past week, called for the people of the United States to come together and for an end to political violence.

He called it "an incredible job by law enforcement" as he addressed an enthusiastic crowd in the White House's East Room as part of the 2018 Young Black Leadership Summit. "We have carried out a far-reaching federal state and local investigation trying to find the person or persons responsible for these events. The events are despicable and have no place in our country. No place."

Shortly before Trump's address, law enforcement officials took Cesar Sayoc, 56, of Aventura, Florida, into custody after officials located 12 devices addressed in recent days to former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former CIA Director John Brennan at CNN and other key Democratic figures.

"I have instructed authorities to spare no resource or expense in finding those responsible, and bringing them to swift and certain justice," Trump said Friday afternoon. "We will prosecute them, him, her, whoever it may be, to the fullest extent of the law."

Political violence, he added, must never be allowed to "take root" in the United States.

"We cannot let it happen," said Trump. "We are committed to do everything to stop it, stop it now."

He also called for unity, commenting that "we must show the world that we are united together in peace, love, and harmony as fellow American citizens."

"There is no country like our country," he said. "Every day we are showing the world just how truly great we are."

He noted that he had completed a briefing with the Department of Justice after Sayoc's arrest, and that he wanted to applaud the FBI, Secret Service, the DOJ, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, the NYPD, and all law enforcement throughout the country.

"These people have worked so hard, and to have done it so quickly, it's looking like a needle in a haystack," he said. "How do you do this so quickly? They have done an incredible, incredible job. I want to congratulate them."

He also noted that he wanted to thank the media covering his comments.
