A majority of Americans view President Donald Trump as a strong and decisive leader, according to a new poll.
A Gallup poll released Friday asked Americans to weigh in on how they rank Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on eight different character traits.
The biggest difference Americans have when comparing Biden and Trump is how likeable they are, according to the results. More Americans feel Biden is likeable than those who feel that way about Trump.
Americans say both politicians are about equally as likely to keep their promises, bring about necessary change, manage government effectively, and display good judgment in a crisis.
Biden scored more points than Trump in every area but strength and decisiveness.
Poll results show:
- 66% of Americans say Biden is likeable, while only 36% say Trump is.
- 52% of Americans say Biden is honest and trustworthy, while only 40% feel that way about Trump.
- 54% of Americans say Biden cares about their needs, while 45% feel Trump cares.
- 49% of Americans say Biden displays good judgment in a crisis, while 44% say Trump acts that way during a crisis.
- 52% of Americans say Biden manages government effectively, while 48% say Trump has a good handle on government.
- 46% of Americans believe Biden keeps his promises, while 45% say Trump keeps his word.
- 48% of Americans feel Biden will bring necessary changes, while 47% say Trump will lead in changes.
- 56% of Americans view Trump as a strong and decisive leader, while only 46% view Biden that way.
The poll was conducted before the first presidential debate and before Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis. Americans responded largely on party lines. Pollsters noted that in nearly all responses, no less than 80% of partisans believe a character trait applied to their own party's candidate, and no more than 20% awarded the trait to the other party’s candidate.
The poll surveyed 1,023 adults between Sept. 14-28. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
