President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Arizona voters "get out and vote" for Republican Debbie Lesko in a special House election because "we need Debbie in Congress."
"Strong on border, immigration and crime," Trump said on Twitter. "Great on the military."
Lesko, 59, a former Arizona state representative, is facing a Democratic newcomer, Hiral Tipirneni, an emergency room physician and a cancer research advocate, in a special election to replace the seat vacated by GOP Rep. Trent Franks.
Franks resigned in December amid sexual-harassment allegations. He was in his third term.
Lesko represented parts of the 8th District since 2009 and has a very strong base of support in a district Franks had locked up since 2003.
Republicans have held the seat since the 1980s.
Tipirneni, 50, hopes to repeat several Democratic wins in recent months as the party seeks to retake the House from Republicans this fall.
Recent polls show the pair in a virtual dead heat, with Tipirneni at 46 percent to Lesko's 45 percent.
Lesko won the GOP primary in February.
