President Donald Trump Friday promised to "do whatever it takes" to get violent offenders off the streets, including continuing his administration's push for tough immigration laws that will keep keep criminals, including members of the MS-13 international criminal gang, from entering the United States.

"We are working to get violent offenders off our streets and behind bars and get them behind the bars quickly and for a long time, or get them the hell out of our country," Trump said during a lengthy speech before a capacity crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

"In 2017, we brought cases against more violent offenders than any administration and a quarter of a century. More than any administration, and we are just giving up. We have tough people."

MS-13 members only understand toughness, and they should not be in the United States, said the president.

"They were let in for years," he said. "They shouldn't be, and we are getting them out. Our administration prosecuted more people for federal firearms charges than has been done in more than a decade and again, we are just gearing up."

Trump said under his administration, 1,200 gang members and nearly 500 human traffickers have already been convicted.

However, immigration laws are "just against us," said Trump. "They are against safety. They don't make sense."

But Democrats, he told the audience are "always fighting for the criminal" rather than "law-abiding citizens."

The administration wants the nation's cities to be "sanctuaries for law-abiding citizens, " not for criminals, said. Trump.

He also complained that congressional Democrats have "totally abandoned" coming up with a solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

"They don't even talk to me about it," he said. "They have totally abandon it. You know, we get the reputation like DACA, it is not Republican. Well, let me tell you. It is a Republican because we want to do something about DACA. The Democrats are being at totally unresponsive. They don't want to do anything about DACA."

If nothing happens, it will not be because of Republicans, but because of Democrats," he said. "The Democrats voted in favor of sanctuary cities, in other words, they voted to protect the criminal aliens instead of voting to protect the American citizens."

Trump also complained that Democrats want to keep the visa lottery system and chain migration, but other countries are "not giving us their best, and then they turn out to be horrendous," but he told his audience their efforts won't succeed.

The president also touted his administration's achievements, including the "blazing" economy, while railing about trade policies that have left the United States in debt.

"NAFTA is no good," he said. "It never was any good. But for some reason, nobody ever changed. . . We can't continuously have other nations taking advantage of the United States."
