An 18-year-old from Leesburg, Virginia, who posted photos of himself flashing his gang's signs on Facebook was viciously murdered in May 2016 by MS-13 gang members who were told by their leader they had to "kill a rival" to move up in the ranks.

Carlos Otero Henriquez' death is one of many criminal cases being tried in the D.C. region, and around the country, involving violence by MS-13 gang members, according to The Washington Post.

President Donald Trump has declared war on the MS-13 gang, which started in Los Angeles and has been linked to crime in 22 states. There are 500 cases nationwide of MS-13 members being charged in major crimes, including 207 murders.

Henriquez was a member of the 18th Street Gang, believed to have 30,000 to 50,000 members across 20 states and sworn rivals to MS-13. The man who ordered Henriquez' murder, Wilmar Javier Viera Gonzalez, received the order to kill him after an MS-13 hanger-on alerted gang leaders in El Salvador to the rival.

"If he was [18th Street], we must kill him," Viera Gonzalez testified in court last week.

Viera Gonzalez has testified against six former subordinates and detailed Henriquez death, saying he was stabbed in the stomach so many times, "you could see his intestines."

"Not everybody's of a strong mind about what happened with Carlos' murder," Viera Gonzalez testified he thought at the time. "Not everybody can live with it."
