An adviser to President-elect Donald Trump is exploring a special election campaign for Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo's seat in the House of Representatives, Politico reports.
Alan Cobb, Trump's national coalitions director and currently working on the president-elect's transition team, had an interview on Friday where he said he was "of course" interested about the Wichita-area seat, noting that he's already began discussing a potential run.
Trump announced Friday that Pompeo is his choice to direct the CIA. Cobb worked as a consultant for Pompeo in 2014, when the congressman faced a tough primary challenge.
Cobb is unlikely to make any announcement about a campaign until after Pompeo has vacated his seat and a special election has been set.
According to Kelly Arnold, Kansas GOP chairman, her "phone has been ringing this morning with people that would like to meet to discuss potential options of running."
Arnold told The Wichita Eagle that she's not ready to release any names of potential candidates, but said "I believe you're going to see a handful of very strong contenders."
