Trey Gowdy does not agree with the crescendo of Republicans calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to be removed, but he does question whether Sessions "should have been the pick in the first place."
The chairman of the House Oversight Committee made the comments on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" show with Maria Bartiromo.
"I can't think of anything he's done . . . that warrants his removal from office," Gowdy told Bartiromo.
"The better question, I think, is whether he should have been the pick in the first place," Gowdy said. "Whether President Trump should have picked him and whether or not then Sen. Sessions should have said, 'You know what, maybe I'm not the right person.'"
Gowdy made the point that in more than 40 states, the state AG is elected independently. Maybe that should be the model for the top law enforcement position in the land, Gowdy said.
"The attorney general position is too important to reward some political supporter with," Gowdy said. "I can think of a lot of reasons that maybe the president should have interviewed other people and found someone apolitical and independent to hold this very important position."
That being said, Gowdy said no matter how great the pick, Democrats would have lined up against any nomination.
"You could pick Jesus and the Democrats would vote against him," Gowdy said. "That's the environment we're in. So, if you're not gonna get Democrat support, at least have the self-awareness to know you picked the very best woman, the very best man that you could.
"Pick someone's who's really really good at law enforcement . . . or let the people decide – let the Supreme Court pick," Gowdy said.
