Rep. Gowdy 'All for' Looking Into Uranium One Deal

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said he was "all for" looking into the Uranium One deal and alleged Clinton Foundation wrongdoing, but he questioned the appointment of a second special counsel.

Gowdy made the comments during a Tuesday interview on Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria."

Attorney General Jeff Sessions called on federal prosecutors to look into "certain issues" of the 2010 Uranium One deal. Sessions also is considering a special counsel to look at concerns raised by Republicans such as the FBI probe into Hillary Clinton's emails, according to The Washington Post.

"Special counsel is appropriate if a conflict exists, and I'm not talking about a conflict with Robert Mueller. He's not supposed to be looking into Uranium One, but we have an entire Department of Justice headed by someone that President [Donald] Trump picked named Jeff Sessions, and he is free to follow any fact pattern, including the fact pattern in 2010," Gowdy said.

Gowdy noted that he had been looking at Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and said he it would not be "beyond the pale" to think Russia was tied to the Uranium One deal, which involved Russia's nuclear agency purchasing the Canadian mining firm Uranium One, a deal approved by the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment when Clinton was secretary of state.

"Whether it has anything to do with Hillary Clinton or not is of no consequence to me. It is worth looking into solely because I don't think Russia was our friend in 2010 anymore than they were in 2016," he said.
