Trent Franks: Trump Agenda Can Go Ahead If Filibuster Is Abolished

The only way for President Donald Trump to pass his agenda is for the Senate to do away with the filibuster rule, Rep. Trent Franks told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday.

Franks, an Arizona congressman, joined Trump at the Phoenix rally on Tuesday night, during which the president said the Senate was wasting its time unless it gets rid of the filibuster.

Franks brought up the subject after he was asked on Fox if he agreed that Trump should shut down the government if he does not get funding for building the wall on the border with Mexico.

"There would never be any discussion about shutting down the government if it weren't for the fact that the Democrats in the Senate on a regular basis take this entire process hostage through the filibuster and that's what causes the shutdown," Franks said.

The congressman stressed that "If we're going to drain the swamp in Washington, we have to pull the plug on the Senate filibuster. It is the only hope for us to get accountable clarity in our appropriations process."

When asked about the opposition of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to doing away with the filibuster, Franks said that although McConnell is against it, eventually the change will happen.

He pointed out that the majority leader was also against changing the rules in order to approve the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, but that it was done in the end, because he knew the American people would not stand for the blocking of a very capable justice from taking his seat on the court due to the need for 60 votes, rather than a simple majority.

Trent said that this proves that the debate over the filibuster is over, and stressed that "it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," because he claimed the Democrats would make the change in any case when they return to power.
