Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch said transgender rights in the United States should be treated as a civil rights issue.
"Because this issue of how we treat transgender people in our community, in particular how we treat transgender students in our schools, relates to how our government is going to interact with people whom we perceive to be different," said Lynch in a preview of an interview to be broadcast on HBO's "Vice" on Friday.
The clip was first reported by The Hill.
"We've made such great progress in so many areas of civil rights accepting people for who are they are," Lynch said.
"And when you see that attempt to roll back that change through the use of the law, that's exactly when the Department of Justice needs to step in."
Lynch's interview follows the Trump administration's Feb. 22 rollback of transgender school-bathroom guidelines enacted by the Obama White House.
