Lashing back at partisan attacks against the White House coronavirus task force response to the global pandemic, President Donald Trump reminded reporters Democrats spent the entire fall seeking impeachment instead of looking at China.
"That wasted a year – they wasted tremendous [time]," Trump told reporters during the coronavirus task force daily briefing. "We could have been doing things that would have been great for our country. They could have been looking into China.
"They should have been looking into China as an example. A lot of people are blaming the Democrats for wasting all that time, because it was during that period of time that it was fermenting."
The first patient in Wuhan, China, is believed to have contracted the virus in November, which is when House Democrats were conducting their impeachment inquiry to draft two articles of impeachment. When the coronavirus proved most deadly in China during the month of January, the Senate was holding its impeachment trial.
Also, Trump was working to finalize a Phase I trade deal with China through the end of the calendar year, but impeachment was making working trade with foreign powers potentially sketchy.
Trump pointed back at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., one day after Pelosi gave him an "F" for testing failures and a slow response to the outbreak.
"Nancy Pelosi's been very nasty," Trump said. "She wasted a lot of time on an impeachment hoax. It was a total hoax. It went nowhere, and that was no good.
"That was not appropriate," he added. That was a bad thing for our country."
Trump said he understands the political "game," but when it flies in the face of a deadly pandemic it should take a back seat to working together to save lives.
