Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., said Sunday it’s “not appropriate” for any candidate or “sitting president” to ask for help from a foreign country, but that it's not clear that was the case in President Donald Trump’s phone call to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Toomey weighed in on reports that Trump asked Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden.

“It is not appropriate for any candidate for federal office, certainly, including a sitting president, to ask for assistance from a foreign country,” he declared. “That's not appropriate. But I don't know that that's what happened here.”

Toomey also said he hoped Congress would get a look at a whistleblower complaint that Trump sought help from a foreign leader — a complaint that White House has so far refused to release.

“What I think ought to happen here is what happens, typically, in these cases. You get some kind of negotiated agreement, whereby the administration shares what they think … doesn't need to be protected for national security purposes,” he said.

“It satisfies the members of the intelligence committees and allows us to determine whether this is something that really requires further investigation or not. I mean, at this point, we don't know anything. We're getting a bunch of leaked rumors. And that's all we have.”
