Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., asserted Sunday that the U.S. economy has come “roaring back” and that the GOP proposal for a $600 billion COVID-19 relief bill is “completely inappropriate.”
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Toomey said the economic future is bright.
“The economy has come roaring back. Disposable income is at record high levels,” he declared. “It's not an economy in collapse, like it was in March.”
Pressed about the GOP plan for a new round of relief, he insisted, "I don't support that, I think it's completely inappropriate.”
Toomey also indicated he’ll be a no-vote on the impeachment of former President Donald Trump, calling conviction “very unlikely” in a trial set to start Tuesday in the Senate.
"You did have 45 Republican senators vote to suggest that they didn't think it was appropriate to conduct a trial, so you can infer how likely it is that those folks will vote to convict,” he said.
”I think it is constitutional. I think it's clearly constitutional to conduct a Senate trial with respect to an impeachment. In this case the impeachment occurred prior to the President leaving office… I stand by everything I've said. I still think the best outcome would have been for the President to resign. Obviously he chose not to do that."
