Tom Cotton: SCOTUS, Military Spending Should Top Trump's First Days

President-elect Donald Trump has a long list of goals he'd like to achieve in his first 100 days in office, but Sen. Tom Cotton said he'd like to see a replacement for late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, along with a push for supplemental military spending be the new president's priorities.

"We need a supplemental spending bill for our military, and Donald Trump and Republicans talked about the campaign and the need to get money back into the troops overseas or about to go overseas," the Arkansas Republican, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

"I think $26 billion, if you look at the administration's own requests, would be appropriate before we consider the long-term health of the military."

Cotton, meanwhile, predicted Trump will draw a "firmer line" when it comes to Iran's violations of the nuclear bill reached during President Barack Obama's administration, and on other matters.

"Much of international relations, it's what our adversaries think about the president, and I wouldn't say it's a coincidence on the day [Ronald] Reagan took office they released hostages, and I hope with the new president they will understand he will take a tougher line," said Cotton.

It will also be easy for Trump to drop the Iran deal altogether, claimed the senator.

"Not submitting it as a treaty did not give it legal status," said Cotton. "The United States can, and in my opinion, should impose sanctions on Iran for violating the terms of the deal, and violating United Nations limits."

A sense of "limits and boundaries" is also important in regards to Russia and Syria, said Cotton, who does not think Russian President Vladimir Putin has had such a sense in years.

"It's like in the 1980s, when Reagan came to office he had to impose new limits, but it laid the groundwork for a better relationship with international agreements with the Soviet Union and the fall of the Soviet Union," he said.
