Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton Wednesday slammed Democratic support for the Iran nuclear deal by using comments from members of their party in earlier criticism of the agreement.
"President Obama and these 42 Democrats bear a direct political, moral, and personal responsibility for the future crimes and outrages of Iran's ayatollahs," the freshman Republican said on the Senate floor. "There will be consequences for their choice, for them and for all of us."
Democrats have blocked moves by the Republican-controlled Senate to bring a vote to the floor blocking the deal with Tehran, effectively giving President Barack Obama his biggest foreign policy victory.
In exchange for curbs on its nuclear arsenal, Iran would receive as much as $150 billion that has been held up for the past five years through crippling international sanctions.
"I feel, at times, as if I have exhausted my words against the nuclear deal with Iran," Cotton said at the outset of his remarks. "I feel as if I can say nothing more than I have already said."
"But fortunately, the Democrats who support the Iran nuclear deal have supplied cogent arguments against the deal," Cotton added. "Thus, rather than speak myself, I will simply let the Democrats speak, in their own words."
The senator then quoted comments from Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Corey Booker of New Jersey, and Bob Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania.
For instance, Cotton quoted Gillibrand as saying: "Iran will still be disruptive in the Middle East and fund terrorist activities."
"This regime will continue to deny Israel's right to exist, the Quds Force will still be listed as a terrorist organization, and Iran will continue to exacerbate tensions with our allies in the region," he said in quoting the Democrat.
"What a condemnation of Iran, what an indictment of the nuclear deal with Iran," Cotton concluded. "But this indictment comes from supporters of the deal."
"Despite their own words, these Democrats have chosen to give Iran billions of dollars that will be used to fund terror and war and ultimately put Iran on the path to nuclear weapons."
