When former FBI Director James Comey likened President Donald Trump in his new memoir to a "mob boss," it had a "ring of truth to it," Hillary Clinton's former running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine, said Friday.
"Just in the excerpts that I've read, this 'untethered to truth' line just has a complete ring of truth to it, based on what we've seen in the first 15, 16 months of the administration," the Virginia Democrat told CNN's "New Day" co-host Chris Cuomo.
But when it comes to likening Trump's team to "mob folks," Kaine said he found it interesting, because the ongoing investigation into Russian collusion "kind of sounds like an espionage case," said Kaine.
"They are a little more like mob types than spies because of the bling, the braggadocio," said Kaine, "so he talks about a mob organization, that also has a ring of truth to it."
Kaine said he doesn't know if Comey's book will offer guidance about what people in the House and Senate have to do to move the country forward, but "it may help the American public understand the completely times we're living in and the high stakes that our institutions stand up and defend the values of the country against some significant internal crisis."
Kaine also discussed the confirmation hearings this week for Mike Pompeo, Trump's nominee for secretary of state, saying the answers to his questions were not answered on Thursday.
The senator was one of two Senate Foreign Relations Committee members who voted to confirm Pompeo as CIA director last year, and he said Friday he doesn't regret that.
"He has a background in intel and was a good solid manager there," Kaine told Cuomo. "But what I really doubted going into the meeting, where is this guy’s predisposition for diplomacy."
