President Donald Trump's Thanksgiving trip to Afghanistan was shrouded in secrecy as the White House went to great lengths to pull it off without any media leaks, reports Politico.

Trump snuck out of Florida on Wednesday night on a different plane from the one he flew in on to his Mar-a-Lago resort. In Maryland, he boarded a twin plane also used as Air Force One and caught a nearly 15-hour flight to Afghanistan 8,000 miles away.

While he was in the air, Trump's team sent out Thanksgiving-themed tweets from the president's account to quell concerns he had gone silent.

Reporters only learned about the destination two hours before their arrival.

"It's a dangerous area and he wants to support the troops," White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham told journalists. "He and Mrs. Trump recognize that there's a lot of people far away from their families during the holidays and we thought it'd be a nice surprise."

Trump spent two-and-a-half hours on the ground in Afghanistan, serving turkey, posing photos and delivering remarks to 1,500 military personnel.
