Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has a slim 41-39 percent lead over Democratic challenger, Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a new Texas Lyceum poll reveals.

Nineteen percent of likely voters polled are still undecided in the race.

The survey results noted Cruz's lead is within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4.67 percent.

"O'Rourke continues to nip at Cruz's heels, but it's a long way to go until Election Day," Josh Blank, Lyceum Poll Research Director, said. "If this race looks different than the rest, that's probably because it is a strong Democratic challenger raising prolific sums of money and tons of earned media."

Here is how the rest of the Texas poll breaks down:

  • 47 percent back Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, compared to 31 percent, who support Democratic challenger Lupe Valdez.
  • 44 percent approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president, while 52 percent disapprove.
  • 43 percent of Texans say the national economy is better off compared to a year ago, 24 percent say it is worse off, and 34 percent believe it is about the same.

The poll, conducted July 9-26, surveyed 1,178 Texans.
