Texas Senate Race on Cruz Control

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has a comfortable lead over Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke in the 2018 midterms, but opinions are mixed on how each has handled the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to new CBS News 2018 Battleground Tracker poll released Monday.

The poll of 1,030 Texas voters, conducted from June 19-22, found:

• If the Senate election were held today, Cruz would win with 44 percent of the vote to O'Rourke's 36 percent. Some 13 percent remain undecided.
• Asked if they approve or disapprove of how Cruz has handled his job as U.S. Senator, 29 percent said they strongly disapprove, 26 percent strongly approve, 28 percent somewhat approve, and 17 percent somewhat disapprove.
• Asked whether they approve or disapprove of how Cruz has handled the issue of separation of families at the border, 25 percent strongly disapprove, while 25 percent somewhat approve, 13 percent somewhat disapprove and 17 percent are not sure.
• Asked whether they approve or disapprove of how O'Rourke has handled the issue of separation of families at the border, 24 percent strongly approved, 24 percent strongly disapproved, 14 percent somewhat disapproved and 29 percent aren't sure.

Meanwhile, Cruz leads O'Rourke 41 percent to 36 percent in the general election race according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll.
