Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is leading his Democratic challenger, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, by 4 percentage points in a tight race in the deep-red state, a new poll showed Wednesday.
The NBC News/Marist survey, O’Rourke has 45 percent support among registered voters; Cruz has garnered 49 percent. Six percent of voters remain undecided.
The poll finds both candidates have consolidated their bases — Cruz has 91 support of Republicans, while O’Rourke has 90 percent of Democrats — but independents are equally split: 46 percent of them back O’Rourke, while 45 percent support Cruz.
The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points for all adults.
O’Rourke raised more than $10.4 million in the second quarter of the year — more than twice as much as Cruz, the Austin American-Statesman has reported.
The RealClearPolitics average of polling, including the NBC/Marist survey, shows Cruz up 6.2 points over O’Rourke.
