Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said if he makes a run for the White House in 2020 he would beat President Donald Trump.

His comments came during an interview on "The Takeout" podcast with CBS News' Major Garrett.

"I'd have to make a decision to run, but if I ran I'd beat him," the Virginia Democrat said. "You bet."

But he would have to secure the party's presidential nomination first.

"Well, listen, we've got a lot of great candidates running," he said. "We're in a mess today. I mean every single day it's a new drama. We need to get some dignity and respect back in the White House, the way it used to be."

McAuliffe was not allowed to run for governor again in Virginia due to term limits.
