House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul, who is in the running for Homeland Security secretary, told Fox News that in his meeting with President-elect Donald Trump, he discussed ramping up vetting procedures for refugees coming from terror hot spots, such as Pakistan.
Appearing Wednesday on "Special Report," McCaul told host Bret Baier he has a bill in Congress that would have Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigate such persons before they enter the country. It would include monitoring social media use.
"We saw the San Bernardino plot unfold with the Black Widow who had things on social media; we didn't know about that," McCaul said. "No employer would hire somebody without looking at their Facebook and social media. The federal government is just now doing this, and not doing it very well."
The Texas Republican said the meeting with Trump went well, and they discussed the Ohio State attack, which was committed by a Somali refugee, who also was a student at the school.
"We need to look at immigration differently," he said. "Coming from the high-threat areas, we need a higher threshold of investigation and review, and vetting before we let these individuals into the United States."
