Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has picked former Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz to chair his campaign in Iowa as the Texas Republican seeks his party's nomination for president in 2016.
Schultz was officially named chair of the Iowa campaign Wednesday. Schultz currently works as the Madison County attorney, which he was elected to in November. He was elected secretary of state in 2010,
according to The Des Moines Register.
Schultz endorsed the presidential campaign of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in 2012, when he won the Iowa caucuses, even though he ended up losing to former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Cruz was the first Republican to
officially announce his candidacy, with a speech in March at Liberty University in Virginia.
Following his announcement, Cruz did a five city tour across Iowa, with a focus on religious liberty and urging "courageous conservatives" to participate in the upcoming presidential election.
