President Donald Trump hopes to institute reforms to the country's tax code and infrastructure all at once, Axios reported.
After the collapse of the Republican healthcare plan, Trump may be looking for a way to win without having to work with the House Freedom Caucus. By offering to make a deal on infrastructure spending, the president could secure some Democratic support," Axios reported.
"It certainly changes the calculus of the timing with the defeat of healthcare," Bill Shuster, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman, told Axios.
"Infrastructure is always something, you can see it, you can feel it, you can taste it," Shuster said. "Having members go back next year when it comes time for the election season to start ... for them to be able to go back home and say, 'Hey, we're going to get this done, this bridge, this transit system, this roadway, this whatever the infrastructure piece, it's coming.'"
Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Penn., said on CNN's "New Day" on Monday that Trump should refocus his attention on passing an infrastructure bill.
"I would recommend they pivot to infrastructure now because that issue I think has the best opportunity to develop some sort of bipartisan coalition in the House and the Senate,” Dent told CNN.
