Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine called for the White House to brief the Senate Intelligence Committee over reports President Donald Trump disclosed classified information to Russian officials, The Hill reported.
"Although the president has the legal authority to disclose classified information, it would be very troubling if he did share such sensitive reporting with the Russians," she said. "The Senate Intelligence Committee should be briefed on this important issue immediately."
Collins is a member of the panel.
Noting there were "conflicting reports" on what Trump shared, Collins added that "the disclosure of highly classified information has the potential to jeopardize sources and to discourage our allies from sharing future information vital to our security."
Trump went on Twitter to discuss what he told the Russians:
Meanwhile, Politico noted Collins was troubled knowing the release of the information could discourage U.S. allies from providing future information in the future.
"The disclosure of highly classified information has the potential to jeopardize sources and to discourage our allies from sharing future information vital to our security," she said.
