Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, on Sunday called a ruling that invalidated Obamacare “far too sweeping” —and predicted it would be overruled.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Collins said Congress should concentrate on an effort to reduce the Obamacare insurance premiums.
“The judge's ruling was far too sweeping,” she said of the ruling by District Judge Reed O’Connor in Texas that struck down the Affordable Care Act. “He could have taken a much more surgical approach and just struck down the individual mandate and kept the rest of the law intact. I believe that it will be overturned.”
Collins praised an effort to reduce Obamacare premiums by as much as 40 percent that came to the Senate floor last March.
“Regrettably it was blocked, much to my surprise, by a member of the Democratic leadership,” she said. “It's [a proposal] we should still pursue. Affordability is a real problem for so many Americans who did not receive the subsidies under the Affordable Care Act …”
Collins also decried the prospect of a government shutdown threatened by President Donald Trump unless there’s $5 billion in spending dedicated for a border wall.
“There's no excuse to shut down government on this issue or any other issue,” she said, referencing a $2.5 billion provision this year and over the next 10 years “to fully fund border security.”
“There's a compromise and people will come to the table in good faith on both sides. We have to prevent a government shutdown,” she said.
